The Students for Tobacco Reduction held a series of "lunch and learns"
at both the University of Lethbridge and Lethbridge Community College
in hopes of bringing some attention to the issue. The series included
topics such as Tobacco Industry Marketing, Marijuana Myths and facts,
and Spit and Chew tobacco.

The response was overwhelming from the
audience. "We've had numerous people contact us, wanting to get
involved" said Philip Ney, the past Co-Chair of the Students for
Tobacco Reduction. "We are trying to bring awareness to the issue, not
only for smokers but for non-smokers as well. Students need to realize
that while smoking rates among adults over the age of 25 are on the
decline, smoking rates among people between the ages of 20-24 are on
the rise" says Chris Broughton, current Co-Chair for STR.

Karoline Philip of the Chinook Health Region fielding questions from
the audience. One question was regarding Altira. More information on
the tactics of this company can be found at

The events,
which took place over the noon-hour gave students an opportunity to
hear both Chris and Philip tell of their experiences with tobacco
industry marketing, as well as a chance to grab some free lunch. "We
are not trying to buy the students, but we feel that students are more
likely to stay and listen to what you have to say if you offer them an
incentive" says Ney.
There are so many 'socially responsible' tobacco companies. A small list of the ones we have dealt with include: DOUBLE DIAMOND Cigars, KING EDWARD Cigars,
Muriel Cigars and
Optimo Cigars.
The most successful event took place on
Wednesday, in which a "socially responsible" tobacco company came and
spoke to the audience. More information about this company can be
found at http://www.licensedtokill.biz. This company talked about how
they understand that they kill people, but it's just business. They're
motto "We're rich, you're dead" struck home with some students. One
commented "how can the tobacco companies do this?". The Students for
Tobacco Reduction also want to remind non-smokers that they should
protect themselves from second-hand smoke. Visit our section about
